Overfishing has already decimated Atlantic cod and bluefin tuna fisheries and threatens many more. Fishing as a practice has been a staple in many diets for thousands of years but it wasn't until the commodification of fish under capitalism and the heightened industrialization of the fishing trades that global fish population and stocks began to seriously plummet. With inventions like the bottom trawler and big net fishing, fisherfolk are able to catch copious amounts incomparably little time. Overfishing has been devasting to the rich biodiversity of the oceans, rendering some areas devoid of important fish species. So, while ocean plastic and ocean trash clean-up efforts like teamseas are at least doing something, there is much more threatening our oceans than plastic.
