One of the first large-scale green ammonia plants in Europe, the plant being built at Kvandal in Narvik will have a maximum capacity of 600 MW and produce between 1,000 and 1,500 tonnes per day. The project intends to make a final investment decision in 2025 and to begin conducting business in 2028.
"Our goal of becoming a prominent player in the market for green hydrogen and hydrogen-based energy products aligns nicely with our partnership with Aker Horizons to create a large-scale green ammonia plant in Narvik. On the foundation of renewable energy, Statkraft aspires to create a new green sector. We can help reduce emissions, accelerate the necessary transition, and generate local employment by producing an industrial product like green ammonia, says Bjrn Holsen, Statkraft's SVP for Hydrogen.
To enable the large-scale supply of hydrogen from Norway to Germany by 2030, the Norwegian and German governments have formed a joint task force. According to Sverre Isak Bjrn, Asset Development Director at Aker Horizons, the collaboration formed between Statkraft and Aker Horizons represents a significant advancement in positioning Narvik Green Ammonia to contribute to this supply.
