Threat of climate change on Polar Bears
Polar bears will be wiped out by the end of the century unless more is done to slow down the warming of the planet. We are in desperate need of aggressive climate change mitigation. As ice melts and the planet warms, these incredible animals become increasingly at risk of extinction. These poor animals don’t understand that their habitat is disappearing. Churchill, Manitoba is a small town in Canada that hundreds of polar bears pass by each year, starting in September and lasting through November, on their migration path. The people there have done great work to make sure the bears and humans coexist in relative safety and diminish risks by removing food sources that may attract bears, implementing a bear spotting hotline, and more. However, experts say that ice is breaking up earlier in the season, meaning bears are forced to return to land weeks earlier than normal and have a smaller window for hunting. In recent years, polar bears have lost nearly a total of 12 days of ice on either end of the season.
