The Action Collaborative on Decarbonizing the U.S. Health Sector was established by the NAM in 2021 with the intention of drastically lowering the 8.5 percent of U.S. carbon emissions that are now produced by healthcare facilities and the enterprises that make up the supply chain for the healthcare sector. The Action Collaborative has sponsored a series of recorded Carbon Accounting 101 Clinics for health care delivery organizations and issued a list of Key Actions to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions by U.S. Hospitals and Health Systems. The Action Collaborative, a group of public and business sector leaders, is launching an ambitious national initiative in 2024 to mobilize the whole health sector to decrease emissions.
The NAM is taking part in the brand-new Climate Crossroads program, which will tackle the climate catastrophe with a potent multidisciplinary strategy. The National Academies has a wealth of information on decarbonization and other climate change-related topics, including: By 2050, reach net-zero emissions, Information on Greenhouse Gas Emissions for Decision Making: An Ocean-Based Carbon Dioxide Removal and Sequestration Research Plan, Accelerating the American Energy System's Decarbonization, A Research Agenda for Negative Emissions Technologies and Reliable Sequestration, Grand Challenges in Environmental Engineering in the Twenty-First Century, Evidence & Causes of Climate Change: Update for 2020, Characterizing anthropogenic methane emissions in the US more accurately.
