River Ocean Cleanup (ROC) and Everware, the first organiser of the “Historical River Cleanup Mission”, have called for donations to buy two more boats for cleanup efforts on the country’s waterways as the current one boat is not enough. ROC has removed 150 tonnes of plastic waste and other floating waste from rivers since March 18, 2022. The organisation needs two more boats to manage waste along the entire 780 kilometres of the Mekong, Bassac, and Tonle Sap rivers to complete its mission by 2025.ROC executive director Nou Sovann said yesterday: “We need half a million US dollars to buy two boats to collect waste in the rivers as one boat can only remove 20 tonnes of waste from a river every day”. Raising funds for the two boats has a long way to go as ROC has only $500 towards buying the boats. Sovann said: “Millions of people have polluted the rivers, especially those who live along the riverbanks, but our staff are working on this issue. If you cannot assist us by collecting waste, you can join us with a donation.”
