Under the VSRP, ships must slow down to 12 knots as they enter or exit the port at a distance of 20 to 40 nm from Point Fermin in order to reduce emissions. 1,560 vessel calls made by 172 companies in 2022 totaled 90% compliance at 20 nautical miles. Almost 66 tons of diesel particulate matter (DPM), 749 tons of nitrous oxides (NOx), 575 tons of sulfur oxides (SOx), and 31,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) were reduced for the year as a result of these companies' efforts.
At the ceremony honoring the shipping lines, Vice President of the Los Angeles Harbor Commission Diane Middleton stated, "Improving air quality in the San Pedro Bay is of the utmost importance." "It's crucial that we raise the standard of living for our neighbors, even when growing cargo volume creates more jobs for our area. We are appreciative of these businesses' voluntary cooperation and ongoing dedication to improving the sustainability and cleanliness of the port environment. We anticipate working together to turn the San Pedro Bay Port complex into a hub with zero emissions.
