Profession: Primatologist, Ethologist, and Anthropologist

A pioneer in the study of chimpanzee behavior, Jane Goodall is a British ethologist, known for her exceptionally detailed and long-term research on the chimpanzees of Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania. She has written a number of books and articles about various aspects of her work and one of the, is “In the Shadow of Man” (1971). She summarized her years of observation in The Chimpanzees of Gombe: Patterns of Behavior (1986). She has nearly devoted 60 years of life to protect chimpanzees from extinction as well as encourage local communities to work for the well-being of animals and their habitat.

Profession: Scientist, Broadcaster, Author, and Environmental activist

David Suzuki is a Japanese Canadian, known for ability to make scientific and environmental issues relatable to the public. His television series ‘The Nature of Things with David Suzuki’ is famous all around the globe. He has also published hundreds of articles and penned several regular newspaper columns as well as published more than 50 books, most of them about genetics or ecological sciences. One of his popular textbook is ‘An Introduction to Genetic Analysis (1976; with Anthony J.F. Griffiths)’ He also advocated for preserving environment and has founded David Suzuki Foundation. He is recipient of the United Nations Environment Programme Medal (1985).

Theodore Roosevelt was the 26th president of the United States (1901–09) and a writer, naturalist, and soldier. He even won the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1906 for mediating an end to the Russo-Japanese War (1904–05). In June 1902, the National Reclamation Act (dedicated to large-scale irrigation projects in the American West) became the first major legislative achievement of his presidency. Of all Roosevelt's achievements, he was proudest of his work in the conservation of natural resources and extending federal protection to land and wildlife.

Some of his famous movies The Aviator (2004), Blood Diamond (2006), The Depad (2006), Revolutionary Road (2008), Inception (2010), Django Unchained (2012),  The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), The Revenant (2015) for which he won an Academy Award and a BAFTA award for Best Actor in a leading role and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019).

He decided to become an environmental activist a decade ago, when energy companies threatened to frack for natural gas near his farm in New York State. He also criticizes politicians for warmongering, economic inequity, and various other issues. The movie ‘Dark Waters’ shaped his environment activism and speaks at anti-fracking rallies, protests pipelines, and campaigns for the Green New Deal.

Profession: Zookeeper, Conservationist, Television Personality, Wildlife Expert and Environmentalist

Steve Irwin was a wildlife expert and conservation enthusiast who truly loved the animals he worked with, who was popularly known as ‘Crocodile Hunter.’ In his television series, he led his viewers on recklessly close encounters with deadly and usually endangered animals in Australia’s Outback and later in the jungles of Asia and Africa. In September 2006, he had a tragic death after being stung by a venomous stingray. However, his family carried on his legacy and have realized his dream of fueling conservation efforts around the world. The Irwin family continues to educate people about wildlife and the importance of conservation.

She has inspired millions of people including young people around the world to voice their concerns about climate change. In 2019, she was named Time Magazine’s Person of the Year, a winner of the 2019 Right Livelihood Award in Sweden, and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Profession: Kenyan social, environmental, and political activist

Wangari Maathai was a Kenyan politician and environmental activist who was awarded the 2004 Nobel Prize for Peace, becoming the first Black African woman to win a Nobel Prize. She served as its chairman from at National Council of Women in Kenya (1981-1987) and introduced the idea of community-based tree planting. She founded the Green Belt Movement focusing on reducing poverty and conserving the environment via planting trees. She has also worked in the field democracy, human rights, and environmental conservation. She addressed the UN several times, speaking on behalf of women during the 5-year review of the Earth Summit and serving on the Commission for Global Governance and the Commission on the Future. She died on September 25, 2011.
