According to study released on Wednesday by World Animal Protection, factory farming alone is accountable for at least 11% of worldwide emissions. According to the organization, factory farm systems house almost 70% of the 80 billion animals that are raised for food globally each year, resulting in 6.2 billion metric tons of CO2 emissions.
The United Arab Emirates, which is hosting COP28, has called on nations to sign a "leaders' declaration" pledging to match food production to more ambitious carbon targets. Additionally, it is leading programs that support agricultural innovation.

In addition to urging nations to reroute subsidies into more sustainable animal and plant-based food production, it demanded a 10-year embargo on the establishment of new factory farms. Large industrial farming corporations were also urged to increase their contributions to funds for damage and climate loss.
