Meet the eco-friendly "mermaid" who is preserving the oceans by setting swimming records.

The 32-year-old woman frequently wears a monofin that joins her feet to make one fin and is designed in such a way that, if seen in the fog, it just may persuade an elderly sea captain that mermaids were real. The Estonian-born swimmer completed the 31.3-mile circumnavigation of Biscayne Bay in Miami in 14 hours and 15 minutes, breaking the previous record by a mile.

She originally set the record in 2019 by swimming 10 kilometers (about 6.21 miles) in California. In light of her five consecutive world records, Liivand said in an interview with CNN Sport that she "adds 10 kilometers every 10 months." But Liivand doesn't just swim these marathon distances; while doing so, the Estonian also picks up any rubbish she comes across in an effort to clean up the world's oceans and spread awareness of how water pollution is endangering both the earth and her sport.
