Want to make sure your local beaches are a safe and clean place for all to enjoy? Join Clean Ocean Action (COA) on April 1 for their annual Spring Beach Sweeps. You can clean up at Ocean City Music Pier, or several other sites nearby, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Last year, Beach Sweeps volunteers picked up 376,969 items from beaches stretching from Bergen County all the way to Cape May County, according to the recently released 2022 Beach Sweeps Report. Most of the debris found was pieces of plastic as you might expect, and similar beach-related items like fish nets, sunscreen bottles and bits of food waste. But volunteers also found some weird stuff - like a three-foot teddy bear, a gallon of tar and a refrigerator. By getting rid of this trash, COA volunteers help make the beach not only better for us people, but for the many creatures that call it home. “If you want to change the world, people power is the answer,” said Cindy Zipf, Executive Director, Clean Ocean Action. “The Beach Sweeps is proof positive of that fact. We are grateful and inspired by the dedication and true-blue spirit of volunteers, especially Beach Sweep Captains who are the heart and soul of these successful events.”
