A climate change campaign group has claimed that increased traffic caused Glasgow to record illegal levels of toxic air pollution last year. Friends of the Earth Scotland has released a report which says that, despite a historic low in 2020 due to lockdown restrictions, the level of air quality on Hope Street saw a dramatic decline in 2021. Friends of the Earth Scotland’s transport campaigner, Gavin Thomson, said: “Bringing buses into public ownership and creating a comprehensive network that connects communities, with electric buses, would reduce pollution and climate emissions. “We need to remember that pollution damages our health through long-term exposure, such as living near the main road throughout your childhood.
