As the world wrestles with how to best tackle food insecurity, the director of MIT’s Senseable City Lab has proposed a lofty idea: farmscrapers. The idea is to build a 51-story skyscraper in China encased by a massive vertical hydroponic farm and filled with amenities such as office space, a supermarket or food court — a development that would take vertical farms “to the next level," per Bloomberg CityLab. The project has been shortlisted, but nevertheless offers a model for integrating nature and farming into everyday city life. Breakthroughs in hydroponic and aeroponic technology are allowing architects to dream up taller indoor facilities to produce crops with higher yields using less land and water. Repors with Bloomberg CityLab explore one innovative design: a 51-story farmscraper that could feed up to 40,000 people per year.
