The Yale University program on climate change published the results of its annual survey in September. It found that 33% of respondents were “alarmed,” nearly double the percentage from five years ago. However, only 25% were “concerned,” and a whopping 24% were either “disengaged, doubtful or dismissive.” The Arctic and Alaska are warming faster than the rest of the earth. Recently a Nova documentary on PBS showed the frightening opening of huge holes in the Arctic caused by methane gas explosions, and lakes that are bubbling methane. As global warming causes the permafrost to melt, these lakes are belching this potent greenhouse gas, often from fossil remains eons old deep within the earth, causing a positive feedback loop; that is, the methane, more potent than carbon dioxide, is exacerbating global warming, causing faster permafrost melting.
