In support of Plastic Free July, more than 100 Year 7 students from Keira High School gathered on Friday, July 21 at Puckeys Reserve to help clean up the area. This cleanup's emphasis was on microplastic. Microplastics are tiny plastic fragments that are less than five millimeters. This kind of trash is typically found all around the world, particularly in waterways, lakes, and oceans where sunshine and water break down larger plastic quickly.
As Plastic Free July draws to a close, we pause to consider the effects of plastics. The cleanup at Puckeys Estate demonstrates how pernicious plastic is to our ecosystem, particularly microplastic, according to Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM. "It is challenging to entirely eliminate microplastics from our surroundings. Preventing the emergence of microplastics is a more straightforward solution. One way we can all contribute to is drastically decreasing the amount of plastic we use and eliminating it altogether if practical.
