Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are mostly used in electric vehicles. However, it is difficult to increase the energy density beyond that of today’s cells. A multi-institution program, the Battery500 Consortium, is working to develop next-generation Li-metal anode cells. Composed of world-class scientists and engineers from various universities, their main focus is to increase rate capability and extend cycle life.
