Boeing and NASA will advise the Sustainable Flight Demonstrator (SFD) project and the construction of the X-66A research aircraft in collaboration with US airlines. Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines will collaborate on operational efficiencies, maintenance, handling characteristics, and airport compatibility as part of a new sustainability alliance. At EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, NASA and Boeing also showcased the new X-66A livery.
When combined with anticipated advances in propulsion systems, materials, and system architecture, a single-aisle airplane with a TTBW configuration might lower fuel consumption and emissions by up to 30% compared to today's domestic fleet.
