Jake Sullivan, the national security advisor, stated on Sunday that China needs to be put under pressure to "take significant, substantial action" to reduce emissions and combat climate change.
In an interview with CNN's "State of the Union," Sullivan stated of China: "They should not be able to hide behind any type of claim that they're a developing nation, to face up to their obligation. Additionally, as per the Paris Climate Agreement, they are required to immediately reduce emissions in a major and meaningful way over a specific time period.
The United States is currently experiencing a variety of weather-related issues, including strong heat waves and significant flooding, which have been linked to climate change, according to CNN host Jake Tapper. China and India have been the focus of those working to address climate change because they are developing countries whose political choices will be significant in the years to come.
"The world, I do believe, should step up and encourage, indeed, pressure China to take far more dramatic action to reduce emissions," Sullivan said to Tapper.
